India got a bit better in air connectivity today when the new greenfield Pakyong Airport near Gangtok in the northeastern state of Sikkim was opened by Prime Minister Modi.

This is first airport in the state, which was once ruled by the Chogyal, and it is now a hotspot for tourism with its majestic monasteries and natural beauty.

The country now has 100 working airports. This airport can handle 500,000 passengers per year and has 5 check-in counters and a terminal area of 3,200 square meters.

The actual flights will start beginning October 3, when SpiceJet will connect Skkim with Kolkatta.

Through UDAN – affordability to tier 2 and 3 cities – India has embarked on an ambitious air connectivity program.
