A three-story pension house in the town of Kananga in Leyte province collapsed Thursday afternoon after a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck the region, east of central Philippines (560 kilometers southeast of Manila).

The pension house was located at the second and third floor of the building near the municipal hall and housed a small grocery at the ground floor. Rescuers are said to have retrieved ten people injured after the 20-second temblor.

Disaster management teams are rushing to retrieve anyone possibly trapped under the rubble of the collapsed building before the night falls. Power in the area was turned off after initial reports of a possible damage to a nearby geothermal power plant supplying electricity to the region.

Meanwhile, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said that the Philippine armed forces stand ready to provide aide and assistance to the residents of the affected region, as the military continues to wage war against (ISIS) Da`esh forces attempting to establish a caliphate in the Philippines.

The small farming town of Kananga is located at a mountainous region of Leyte province and home to nearly 50-thousand residents. The whole province was severely damaged in November 2013 after Super Typhoon Haiyan trashed the central Philippines. (Dean M. Bernardo)
