The President of the Italian Republic Mattarella has a New Year’s message and a message for the World Day of Peace for Pope  Francis and the world.

This is a “high” and “incisive” valid message “for every ruler, believer or non-believer, in every corner of the globe”.  It’s a message to Pope Francis for the celebration of  World Day of Peace: “Good politics is at the service of peace”, These are the words of the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella to the head of State of the Vatican, Pope Francis.

The common good

The head of the Italian State has written to the Pontiff, handing the “most fervent and warm wishes for the new year” and taking up the the 52nd edition of the appointment which, underlines Mattarella, “offers to those holding public office, especially if they exercise the power of government – at the local, national or international level – the opportunity to compete with the stringent demands of a service that must always be oriented towards the highest ideals, the construction of the common good, respect for fundamental rights, the promotion of harmony among the peoples “.

Political responsibility for all citizens

The President, who had already greeted the Pope during his speech at the end of the year, assures to share in “full” the inspiration of the message to Pope Francis, who “clearly outlines the line of discrimination”

He explains: Between the figure of good political and degeneration of public action it’s leads by us, personally and collectively, to ensure that our work remains far from defaults, arbitrations, or instrumental contrapositions to become a bearer of cohabitation and peace, while opportunely reiterating that political responsibility is attributed to all citizens. Without whose involvement, it is not possible to build strong and vital democratic institutions “.

The acting of a good housekeeper

“Good politics, one that encourages dialogue, stimulates the participation of young people and enhances the contribution of each member of society is the ideal horizon in which the concrete action of the good ruler is situated” Mattarella referred to the words of the Pope when he said, a “blessed” man when is someone with honesty in intention, ability to listen, courage in the genuine search for the common good becomes the protagonist of a public action aimed at justice, equity, respect for oneself and the other, for the construction of peace .

“Thus understood”, continues the President, “politics becomes a permanent challenge of service that can also require difficult decisions, unpopular choices, capacity for sacrifice and personal renunciations; but, if properly exercised, it truly becomes an ’eminent form of charity’.

Protection of fundamental human rights

“In today’s context”, highlights Mattarella,” it becomes central “to guarantee continuous and robust protection of fundamental human rights, without neglecting the duties that accompany them. It’s a combination that translates into the full dignity of every human being and every citizen”.

On the other hand, the Italian president recalls, “The Italian Constitution – which came into force only a few months before the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – recognizes and guarantees the inviolable rights of men requires the fulfillment of the mandatory duties of solidarity political, economic and social “.

Preventing conflicts

The President reiterates, “We need to defend these principles also at the international level and work to support initiatives aimed at preventing new conflicts, managing global challenges, building peaceful and inclusive societies”.

He assures Italy will  do so during the exercise of the three-year mandate in the UN Human Rights Committee, “with the aim of contributing to the affirmation of the universality of the rights of liberty and equality”.

To measure oneself with novelties and changes
