DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The smell of smoke forced a Spirit Airlines Airbus A319 en route from Chicago to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to make an emergency landing, the airline said.

The plane with 128 people aboard, including the crew, was almost at its destination when a flight attendant smelled smoke in the cabin and alerted the cockpit, The Orlando Sentinel reported Wednesday.

Airline spokeswoman Misty Pinson says the smoke dissipated once the plane’s engines were turned off after landing in Daytona Beach, Fla., Tuesday afternoon.

Three passengers who complained of shortness of breath were transported to Halifax Medical Center,

Cristina Krzeminski, whose oxygen mask failed to drop down, said it was a frightening experience.

“There was panic all over our faces,” Krzeminski said, adding she didn’t see any smoke but her eyes were burning and it smelled like rotten eggs.

Airport spokesman Stephen J. Cooke said some of the passengers chose to rent cars to complete their trip rather than wait for another aircraft to arrive.
